Volunteer Guest Background Screening Process

The Blue Springs School District has partnered with the local company DataSource to enhance and strengthen our current background screening process for Volunteer Guests. It is FREE, SECURE, and SIMPLE to register.
Please go to the link below. All Blue Springs School District schools will be listed. Click on the building in which you are planning to volunteer. (If you have students attending multiple buildings, you will only need to complete one application. After completing the application, please contact the Building School Resource Officer for the school you applied at and let them know you have students at additional locations).
Please note:  district employees/volunteer staff are required to receive a MACHS (Missouri Automated Criminal History System) background check prior to being employed. This is a comprehensive background check with continuous monitoring. Therefore, district employees looking to volunteer at their child’s school should not complete this screening as they have already been evaluated through the MACHS system.
Volunteer applications MUST be submitted at least five (5) days before the event for which you are volunteering.

After submission, please wait for an email from DataSource. The email will let you know whether you have been approved or denied.
The following convictions will be denied Volunteer Approval Status:
  • Felonies
  • Domestic Assault or Violence Convictions
  • Drug Distribution Convictions
  • Any conviction related to the health or welfare of a child
  • The inclusion of a potential volunteer on any disqualification list or confirmation of a substantiated finding made by a governmental or social services entity indicating that an individual has perpetrated the abuse or neglect of another individual.

The unreviewable offenses identified above will not be subject to any dates of expiration that would allow for volunteer service. Those offenses, regardless of the passage of time, will remain exclusionary for volunteers and grounds for removal of approved volunteer status if formerly approved. The District reserves the right to consider and utilize offenses for volunteer disqualification at its sole discretion.
Although this process will prevent an individual from volunteering for school activities like PTA events, field trips, or lunch, it will NOT prevent a parent/guardian from partnering with the school to attend their child’s events such as parent-teacher conferences, school performances, or family nights. This process is solely for those Volunteer Guests that could have the potential of working with or being involved with students who are not their own.  Individuals receiving and reviewing initial background check information will maintain the confidentiality of any documentation received. If an initial review shall provide cause for a more detailed review of background information, only those individuals with a need to obtain personally identifiable information shall have access to such information.
